DISC HERNIATION EXERCISE - WEEK 1-FLEXION INTOLERANCE

Have you been told you have a disc bulge or herniation? Maybe you’ve even been told that surgery or injections are your only option. The truth is, disc herniations are incredibly common—especially between the ages of 30 and 50—and most can be treated conservatively with chiropractic care, acupuncture, and physical therapy.

Research shows that approximately 1% to 3% of people experience SYMPTOMATIC lumbar disc herniations, and many find relief without invasive procedures.The key word here is “SYMPTOMATIC”. Because many people are walking around with “ASYMPTOMATIC” disc herniations, bulges, and degeneration all the time.  Some data supports more than 50% of individuals between the ages of 30-50! This is why imaging does not always tell the whole story.  But that's for another blog!

So what do we do about SYMPTOMATIC disc herniations?

With over 20 years of experience and thousands of disc patients, I have developed a systematic approach to deal with disc related injuries.

Some patients with disc injuries have pain bending over, some have pain standing back, some patients just have pain breathing! but once you identify what aggravates it the path to pain free living

The most common presentation I see is “flexion intolerance”. In other words, bending over makes it worse.

Now this may sound simple but often times the solution is just doing a movement in the opposite direction of what irritates it. For “flexion intolerance” my first go to exercise is a “prone press up”. Now remember.  These are just starting points.  Treating disc related issues takes time and more than one simple exercise.  But this is a great starting point!
