TIGHT BACK? IT'S NOT ALWAYS A STRETCHING PROBLEM

“Please crack my back! It feels so tight all the time.”

That’s what a long-time patient of mine—a 40-year-old former gymnast—said to me a couple weeks ago. Like many gymnasts or dancers who start flexibility training at a young age, she already had plenty of mobility—if not excessive mobility. She could literally fold herself in half!

But here’s the surprising part: despite years of yoga and stretching, she still complained of feeling stiff and tight. On top of that, she was cracking her back multiple times a day, chasing relief that never lasted.

Why Stretching Doesn’t Always Fix Tightness

A lot of people assume that if they feel “tight” or “stiff,” the solution must be more stretching. Yoga classes, mobility routines, even self-cracking the spine—it becomes the default answer.

But the truth is, tightness doesn’t always mean you need more flexibility.

Here’s why: mobility without strength often means instability. When the body feels unstable, it responds by tightening muscles as a protective mechanism. So even though my patient could stretch into every yoga pose imaginable, her body still felt unsafe—and that “tight” sensation never went away.

How Chiropractic Adjustments Fit In

Now, here’s an important caveat: chiropractic manipulation (or adjustments) can absolutely help with that tight feeling. They often provide short-term improvements in mobility and pain relief.

But just like over-stretching, relying on adjustments alone won’t fix the root issue. If the body lacks stability, the tightness always comes back.

Why Strength Training Is the Missing Piece

What my patient really needed was strength training. Once we shifted her focus to resistance training, the results were dramatic:

  • The feeling of tightness eased
  • Her back felt more stable
  • She no longer felt the constant need to crack her spine

The Takeaway

If you’ve been stretching for years but still feel tight, the problem may not be flexibility at all—it may be a strength issue. Building stability gives your body confidence, so it doesn’t need to lock down with tightness.

The best way to know what your body really needs? Get a proper evaluation.

That’s what we do here—we don’t just “crack backs” and send people on their way. We create individualized plans to address the real problem, whether that’s mobility, strength, or both.
