TIGHT HIPS AND LOW BACK PAIN

Yes, They’re Connected (And No, It’s Not Just “Old Age”)

Low back pain is one of the top reasons people walk—well, hobble—into our office.
There are many possible causes, but one culprit we see again and again? Poor hip mobility.

Your hips are more than just something to shake on the dance floor!. They’re the main connection between your upper and lower body. When they’re stiff, tight, or moving like they belong to an 100-year-old statue, your lower back takes the hit. And surprise—back pain follows.

Why Hip Mobility Matters for Low Back Pain

The hip joint is a fancy little ball-and-socket setup where your thigh bone meets your pelvis. Strong muscles like your hip flexors, glutes, and hamstrings keep it all moving smoothly.

That is… until years of sitting at a desk, old sports injuries, or just “I’ll exercise later” catch up with you. Tight hips force your back to pick up the slack. Your lower spine gets compressed, muscles lock up, and your pain becomes the unfortunate focus of your daily routine.

Translation: If your hips can’t move, your back will suffer.

A Few Hip Mobility Exercises (Because Doing Nothing Hasn’t Worked So Far)

If you’re ready to actually do something about it, here are some moves to get started:

  1. Dynamic Leg swings - See video!
  2. Seated Figure-4 Stretch – Cross one ankle over the opposite knee and lean forward. Feels amazing—eventually.
  3. 90/90 Hip Stretch – Sit with one leg in front, one to the side, lean forward. Bonus: makes you look like you do yoga.

Do these daily. Yes, daily. Your back will thank you.

Other Ways to Stop Torturing Your Lower Back

  • Stretch after sitting – If you can binge-watch a show for 3 hours, you can stretch for 3 minutes.
  • Move more – Walking, yoga, Pilates, strength training… anything but just sitting there.
  • Chiropractic care – We can help your joints move like they’re supposed to.
  • Acupuncture – Needles, but in a good way.
